Scope and Content

In the 1950s, the Fram Corporation, makers of oil filters and other car related parts published a series of small booklets suggesting week long trips that a family might make by automobile. In the 1953 edition of "Sightseeing with the Swayzes" a Great Lakes tour visits Saugatuck on the 6th day. --- 5TH DAY From Mackinaw City follow U. S. 31 inland off Lake Michigan for 31 miles to Petoskey. There visit the picturesque Cross Village Indian settlement. Drive next for 17 miles to Charlevoix where unexcelled golf, yachting, fishing (perch and bass), and swimming await you. Another 53 miles brings you to Traverse City where you'll find yourself in cherry country that has become one of the favorite winter-summer sport areas in this part of the country. (An interesting sidelight: this particular spot is exactly half way between the equator and the North Pole.) A few miles farther on is Interlochen, famous for its National Music Camp. Again on U. S. 31, drive 95 miles to Ludington where fishermen's dreams come true. Then, 99 miles to Holland, the tulip center of America. Many moderate or higher priced sleeping accommodations are available here. 6TH DAY A few miles south of Holland stop off at Saugatuck, one of the largest art colonies in the Middle West. Sooner or later, all American artists visit this area in an effort to capture its fabulous beauty on canvas. Farther down (18 miles) is South Haven in the heart of Michigan's fruit country. Relax here on one of the finest sand beaches in the state. If you follow the lake from here on, you will be back in Chicago in just a few hours with your heart filled with happy memories of America's wonderland of lakes.
