Two copper ingot salvaged from the Pewabic shipwreck.
a. The brick-sized ingot has rounded edges and "PW" "L (anchor symbol) S" and "MC" stamped on one side.
b. A slightly larger 20-pound ingot with a paper sticker that reads "salvaged from Steamer ‘Pewabic’”Context
The "PW" stamp stands for Pewabic, "LTS" for the Lake Superior Transit Company, and "MC" for Mining Company.
In 1895 Worden G. Smith of the American Wrecking and Salvage Co. made attempts to locate the wreck and came to Saugatuck to negotiate with Capt. R.C.
Brittain owner of the "red bottomed" line for services of the Steamer H.A. Root.
The last week in May 1896, with the threat of the Spanish-American war creating new demands for copper. the Root left Saugatuck harbor under the command of Lakes veteran Capt. George Phelps with William Bradley as chief engineer.

After a brief return to Milwaukee for the funeral of the two divers and repairs on the bell, work went on and when the Root returned to Saugatuck in October, Capt.
