Context

The "PW" stamp stands for Pewabic, "LTS" for the Lake Superior Transit Company, and "MC" for Mining Company. In 1895 Worden G. Smith of the American Wrecking and Salvage Co. made attempts to locate the wreck and came to Saugatuck to negotiate with Capt. R.C. Brittain owner of the "red bottomed" line for services of the Steamer H.A. Root. The last week in May 1896, with the threat of the Spanish-American war creating new demands for copper. the Root left Saugatuck harbor under the command of Lakes veteran Capt. George Phelps with William Bradley as chief engineer. ... After a brief return to Milwaukee for the funeral of the two divers and repairs on the bell, work went on and when the Root returned to Saugatuck in October, Capt. Phelps made a display of relics in the show window of Heath's drug store.
