Description

This is a lithograph made by artist and teacher Elsa Ulbricht, and titled “Our Bar”. This lithograph was made in 1938. The clothing of the bar patrons reflects the year, such as in the small brimmed hats and loose shirts tucked into trousers. There are several details that make this scene particularly interesting, such as the sweeping gaze of the patron in the top left of the composition, who looks over at the shadowy figure on the far right. The person on the far right faces the main table with no drink in hand, and the body language of everyone suggests tension. There is a small black cat in the bottom right corner and its body contour acts like an arrow pointing up at the shadowy figure. The bar appears casual as we can see one person sitting on a crate and there are boxes of presumably beer in view behind the bar.
