Forty-four Years at Shorewood by Charles B. Burdick and Louis R. Howson. Published in August 1946 by the Shorewood Association with the stated purpose of recording the founding of the resort community. The preface warns "The eight men who started Shorewood have all passed away. Only a few gray heads are left who remember its beginning."
The eight men were John W. Alvord, W.A. Carrol, W.R. Vosburgh, Frederick A. Sperry, Ernest S. Fowler, Ferry W. Leach, Frank B. White and Lucius E. Sayre.
The 66-page book offers chapters about Shorewood, its cottages, the actual builders, our ancestors, early days and the Lake Shore Chapel plus a map of the community.
This particular copy was a gift to Edwin House who wrote the author Mr. Howson in Feb. 1947 to point out that he (House) should also be considered a founder because in 1895, while he was attending high school in Oak Park, Illinois, he invited Superintendent Hatch, Prof. D.O. Barto and Dr. Hoyt, pastor of the Oak Park Presbyterian Church to come to Saugatuck as guests in his father's home. These Oak Park men liked what they saw and told their friends about Saugatuck, resulting in the establishment of the property that became Shorewood. A reduced copy of Mr. House's letter is taped to page one of the book.
The authors acknowledged Mr. House's contribution and gifted him this book with an inscription on the front endpaper. Two letters on Alvord, Burdick & Howson letterhead, attached inside the book's front cover, confirm the gift.Context
