Lighthouse and Milk ShedEntry/Object ID
2016.37.24Description
Watercolor of the Saugatuck lighthouse and surrounding area. The front of the piece displays the lighthouse before its destruction by a tornado in 1957. The building is grey with white trim and "1859" painted over the porch. The windows show depth which gives them a more realistic feeling rather than being flat and static. A large tree sites in front of the house, with a treeline visible in the back.
On the back of the painting, there is another image, but this time it is of a milk shed. A small white shed sits in the right corner next to two milk containers and a bare forest visible in the distance. This image is bare compared to the front. In the lower right corner of this side of the image is the signature, "Jim Van Oss" painted in silver.Type of Painting

While the painting is not falling apart or torn, there are signs of foxing in the upper left of the front of the piece. There is also what appears to be a stain in the lower left of the front. The stain is a dark brown and it is unknown what caused it. It is my recommendation that this piece be sent to a conservator to prevent any further damage.Relationships
