Description

Trigger warning - human remains. Two newspaper clippings about Saugatuck history. An August 20, 1940 Grand Rapids Press montage of photos includes the chain ferry, the shuffleboard courts by the Hotel Butler in Morrison [Cook] Park, Rowena Lecoste and "Indian relics", an artist at work and Charles E. Bird, the state's oldest druggist. A second clipping by Audry D. Strohpaul is likely related to the first. It begins by noting the original Miami, Pottawatomie and Ottawa residents and settlement by William G. Butler, before it analyzes the per capita wealth, the various names, historic eras and firsts. The final paragraphs outline the state of Saugatuck in 1940: 4 hotels, 5 commercial fishing firms, American Twisting Co., 4 churches, Oval beach, the Pokagon Club, 4 art schools.
