Scope and Content

Programs, photos, budgets, expenses, receipts, newspaper clippings, button, posters, planning materials and other documents related to the Saugatuck-Douglas Historical Society's Nautical History Celebrations in 1987, 1988 and 1989. The event programs include profiles about the boats on display, an article about Saugatuck ships and shipbuilding, details about a photo display of locally-built crafts and an article about the Keewatin (1988). The 3-ring binder includes planning materials with the following headings: registration, t-shirts, ads for programs, advertisement - letters, posters, displays, activities-facilities, plaques, dinner-dance, programs and press. Three envelopes of photos, mostly of participant boats, at the events. A copy of "Heritage Hailer" volume 7, number 2, Summer 1987 - a newsletter published by the Classic Yacht Association of Benton Harbor, MI with a front-page article about the event and history of the Keewatin which was reprinted in the 1988 celebration program.

Context

The first event was held on July 11-12, 1987 and was promoted as "A perspective of local and Great Lakes nautical history." The program lists "Heritage boats on display from 1-6pm at the site of the S.S. Keewatin." The 2nd event was July 9-10, 1988. No dates for the 1989 celebration.

The celebration programs include descriptions of the following heritage boats on display: 1987 -- Tops o Cotton, Sea Melody, Bright Star, Navigo, Antigone, Seascape, Black Beard, 1947 Cris Craft, Ahab, Triton, Roamer, White wing, Venture, Helene, Satyagraha, Farewell, Daily News, Morning Star, Dust-n-Ash, Manitou, Bess, Princess, Dreamboat and William Filbert. Three boats were built by Ferdinand "Red" Nimphius of Wisconsin. 1988 -- Ahab, Satyagraha, Dorothy Day, Chestnut Cruiser, Navigo, White Wing, Venture, Tops o Cotton, Triton, Morning Star, William Filbert, Cocle Shell, Sweet Pea, Wei Shen, White Heron, Liberty, Roamer, Suzy Q, Swampscott Dory, Dust-n-Ash, Bess, Rachel S., Figate Bird and North Wind.
