1926 | pastel on hand laid paper
Painter Albert Krehbiel was a Midwestern artist by birth, training, and choice of subjects. Born in low, raised in Kansas, he graduated from Bethel College in Indiana in
1895. He later studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and left for Paris in 1903 after winning a travel scholarship to the Academie Julian.
Krehbiel returned home to become an instructor at the Art Institute for thirty-nine years, while also teaching at the Armour Institute from 1913 until his death. For a number of years, the artist maintained a home in Saugatuck, where beginning in 1926, he taught at the Ox-Bow Summer School of Painting.
Stylistically, he began as a traditional academic and moved from Impressionism to Abstraction. This pastel depicts the bridge crossing the Kalamazoo River looking towards Douglas. It is dated in pencil "July-21-26" the year he first began his work at Ox-Bow.
