Digging the new channel 1905-6Entry/Object ID
2023.10.353Description
A dredging rig, with smoke pouring from one stack, excavates a new outlet for the Kalamazoo River.
This image was featured as History Mystery #110 with the solution: This was the historic scene in the spring of 1906 as the new channel was cut. It was reported in the June 29, 1906 issue of the Commercial Record. The new channel was cut on part of the area of Old Singapore. Large deposits of sawdust slowed the digging.
This entry includes newspaper accounts of the dredge breaking through and plans for a "Harbor Day", organized by D.F. Ludwig, to celebrate the achievement.Photograph Details
