Scope and Content

B/W photo of two pairs of men shaking hands at a construction site. Ten news stories drafted by Bill Simmons, Commercial Record editor, tracking development of Saugatuck's municipal sewer system. The stories are undated but written prior to 1966. The text may or may not have appeared in the paper or were edited significantly before publication.

Context

In order to accommodate the large volumes of waste generated by summer visitors and to comply with government water safety regulations, Saugatuck slowly put in place a modern waste-management system. Prior to the treatment system, sewage was disposed of in septic fields or into the river.
