Description

Large photo album loaded with cabinet card portraits of members of the Lee Leland family. Album cover is upholstered with red-pink velvet with embossed "Album" and flower motifs Twenty pages, with gilt edges, are designed to hold cabinet-card photos in multiple sizes. Tucked inside the album are family documents including 1901 Michigan Teachers' Institutes certificate for Edith Leland 1902 Saugatuck Public Schools certificate of promotion for Blanche Leland 1900 and 1901 School certificates of promotion for Lulu Leland two unsigned letters

Context

The Leland family included important early Saugatuck merchants, business and politicians. Chris Yoder suspects that the album belonged to Nathan M. Leland [1856-1931], brother of Thornton [and Everard Parker Leland and George Leland], because Nathan’s children’s school promotions were tucked inside. Notes

The spine is broken and the latching mechanism is missing. There is some foxing and tears on the pages but the album has honorably fulfilled its protective mission: the photographs are well preserved.
