Saugatuck Township Honor RollEntry/Object ID
2022.03.61Description
B/W photo of a monument or sign that listed the names of Saugatuck, Douglas and the Township residents serving in World War II. According to the August 15, 1944 "The Dope" the monument was located between the Saugatuck tennis courts and Wilson's [ice cream shop, aka Santa Fe Traders in 2022].
The monument is shaped like a Greek temple with an eagle and shield insignia in the pediment. Star and stripes banners flank five columns for names. Two and 2/3s of the columns are filled with hand-lettered names on individual planks. The top of the monument displays the text "Honor Roll / Saugatuck Township" in neon letters. The base of the monument displays the text "We fight for a better world".
Behind the monument is a chain link or wire fence and trees.
The Honor Roll was described in the August 15, 1944 / No. 40 issue of "The Dope" (a newsletter for Douglas vets):
"Did you know that you men have made another Honor Roll? Saugatuck has erected one, beside the tennis court north of Wilson's, & has listed thereon the one hundred and thirty-six men & women now serving from Saugatuck township. It is a handsome Roll, with neon lighting, a gold shield, and red-white-&-blue decorations. But the thing that gives it particular distinction, of course, is the inclusion of Douglas names."
