Scope and Content

Materials used to plan and execute the 2010 tour in honor of Ox-Bow's 100th anniversary. The tour text was based on material written by Judy Bowman Anthrop who had recently published her book "A Portrait of Ox-Bow." Kristi Baker-Mueller provided graphics including a visitor's field guide. Sally Winthers organized the tour and wrote the docent and guide summaries. Fran Van Howe organized local artists to be working Plein Air on the Ox-Bow Meadow that day. Collection includes planning and promotional documents, the guide for guides, site information packets for the docents, tour overview and timeline, newspaper clippings, raffle tickets, brochures and event photos by Charlie Terry.

Context

This event was a variation of the SDHS's popular Heritage Festivals and Home Tours. Typically the Home Tour allowed visitors to wander freely between sites. The Ox-Bow executive director Jason Kalajainen required that visitors to the Ox-Bow site be escorted at all times. In response, a new kind of tour was planned. Visitors (shuttled in by a rented Interubran Bus) assembled at the SDHS museum at Mt. Baldhead Park to view the Ox-Bow exhibit while they awaited their tour time. At the appointed time, they boarded an Interurban Bus for transport to the Ox-Bow campus. John Sanford presented introductory information to the visitors during the ride. Once on campus, a guide escorted small groups from site to site where interpretive "hosts" took over to present information, stories or point out interesting details. The guides were not expected to know any history but they were expected to get their charges between each site and back on the bus on time. The tour included a refreshment break at the Metternich Lodge, a chance to view local artists at work and hikes to the Crow's nest. On the day of the tour, it poured rain for about 30 minutes, causing some shifting of planned locations. Site hosts included John Sanford, Harold Thieda, Peg Sanford, Jim Burkes, Jim Schmiechen, Jane Underwood, Sandy Brookhouse, Kathleen Markland, Vic Bella, Judy Hillman, Randy Chambers and Patty Birkes. Guides included Kay Smalley, Sandra Theida, Priscilla Lynch, Jim Searing, Marylynn Webster, Brenda Chambers, George and Dawn Schumann, Dick and Barbara Lucier, Mary Pat and Tom Carollo. James Cook and Linda Chaviz led Crow's Nest hikes. Other volunteers included Judi and Howard Vanderbeck, Charlie Terry, Ed Kelly, Dottie Lyon, Janeen Fowler, Kathy Sturm, Judy Mauger, Donna St. Andre, Jerry Hill, Bill Hess, Fred Schmidt, Steve Hutchins, Alyssa Fisher, John Peters and Sunny Hill. Artist working on site included Holly Leo, Dawn Stafford, Jill Lareaux, David Baker, Roy Brown and Sheryl Drenth
