Context

PROLOGUE HILL-MANN-JOHNSON-EDIN, A FAMILY GENEALOGICAL STUDY, is the delineation of the families of my parents. The book begins with the Hill family, my mother's maternal line, which began in Henrico County, Virginia, in 1680. They eventually settled in Alexandria, Missouri, and it was easy for me to make trips from my home, at that time in Illinois, down to Alexandria to visit the library, the historical society, and the family's actual residences. Here the family transitions into the Mann family, my mother's paternal line, which started out in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1634 and eventually came west. Their original route was along the present Route 90, which was my route when I visited my son in Maine. On my yearly visits to Maine, I made side trips in New York to Hudson, Walden, Mannsville, Watertown, and especially Whitesboro, where some of the families lived. At all these places I could consult libraries, historical societies, and cemeteries. Our branch of the Mann family ended up in Keokuk, Iowa, right across the Des Moines River from Alexandria, Missouri, where again I had the same resources as for the Hill family. The Johnson family, including the paternal and maternal lines, was another matter. My father was the second generation in this country from Sweden. He did not speak, write, or read Swedish and neither do I. Unable to make frequent trips to various locations to get additional information as I did with the Hill and Mann families, I was left with charts constructed in Sweden by John Eriksson (now deceased) as my only source of information. John Eriksson traced the Johnson and Edin lines back to the 1600s in Sweden. I am indeed grateful and fortunate to have his research. This will give you an overview of what follows. Nancy J. Budd
