Two photos from a warm up event to the August 17-2, 1970 Douglas Centennial.
1. Eight women, some in historical costumes and gloves, stand proudly with their oars held vertically in a steamer-era lifeboat. The lifeboat has a nameplate "Montreal" on the stern by the rudder. Three men are in another lifeboat tied alongside. Behind the lifeboat is the tugboat Reiss and two River Queen houseboats are visible on the shore. Photo has print reproduction calculations written on the back and a stamp from the Prosch-Jensen's of Fennville. 8x10"
When the photo was printed in the 27 Aug 1970 Commercial Record, the caption read "The women's lifeboat racing team, glorious in defeat, from left, coxswain Mary Net Steele, Carole Schreckengust, Karon Wallace, Faye Wightman, Fran Manifold, Carol Phillips, Joanne Hays and Kit Lane."
Photo 2 shows a race in progress with three lifeboats underway, all heading away from the camera. Beyond, a powerboat sprays water into the air. 5x7"
This photo ran in the July 30, 1970 Commercial Record with the caption "There they go, folks, in the first lifeboat race held for some time, perhaps ever, on Kalamazoo Lake. The tree boats were captained by Mack Bouwman of Tower Marina, Mrs. Mary Net Steele and Navy man Erik Peterson. Bouwman's boat won the race from Willow Park to the Butler, Mrs. Steele's boat with a woman's crew was second, and Peterson's boat, crewed by some friends from Great Lakes Naval Training Station, was last.
