Description

Single-page, hand-out map provided "compliments of Saugatuck Douglas Chamber of Commerce." The local area map covers the lakeshore from St. Augustine Seminary to Ganges. An inset Michigan-state map shows the location of Saugatuck-Douglas along with nautical distances, mileage and driving directions. The back is blank. The map indicates roads, landmarks and tourist attraction sites including the dune schooner rides, the lighthouse, Fishtown Trail, Ox-Bow, Mt. Baldhead, Devil's Kitchen (a dune blowout, also called the Bowl and the Pit because it was protected and warm on windy days) Oval Beach, Camp Gray, Storm Warning Tower, Saugatuck Yacht Club, Shorewood, Saugatuck Marine Museum, West Shore Golf, Douglas Water Tower, Community Hospital at Kirby House, County Park and Beach, Peterson's Mill, orchards off Old Dug Road and north of Pier Cove. The Chamber of Commerce office is show as being near the Saugatuck Village Hall. The Saugatuck Marine Museum is show near Tower Marine, not at the Ferry Store location. More distant attractions like Carousel Mountain, Fennville, Todd Farm, Swan Creek Wild Life Gamer Area, New Richmond and the Allegan Forests are indicated with arrows pointing off the map area.

Context

The map lists the ski lodge Carousel Mountain that was open from 1963-1973 so the map is from that period. Compare the very similar map on the back cover of the 1964 Visitors Guide, 2022.07.13
