Douglas Bayou Miniature
December 1961 | watercolor on paper
Lean in and look closely at this miniature.
Ask yourself how its scale affects your view of this familiar landscape?
How does it change your thinking about landscape as an artform?
Lifelong Douglas resident Colleen Bekken painted this tranquil, intimate scene along the Kalamazoo River at the age of 23.
This broad open area along the river in Douglas known as Wade’s Bayou creates pleasant views. The open composition of water and forest follows models of classical landscape painting with its stylized trees framing the view.
