Wellington Reynolds was born on a farm in New Lenox, Illinois. He entered the school of the recently established Art Institute of Chicago in the fall of 1885. He studied at the Royal Academy in Munich in the 1880s and studied at the the Royal Academy, the Julien Academy and later at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
He returned to Chicago in 1898 where he became well-known as a portrait artist. He joined the faculty of the Art Institute of Chicago where he taught until his retirement in 1938.
