View of Saugatuck Harbor from Ox-Bow
circa 1940 | oil on panel
This oil painting evokes the immediacy of a view returned to again and again by artists in the twentieth century. Francis Chapin served as director of the Ox-Bow Summer School of Painting in the 1940s and took students to paint en plein air often as part of their studies.
