Description
Flood - washout Portage Road, June 18, 1973. Note on back: " This washout on Portage Road was a result of the Missouri River running into the Mississippi. The road normally acts as a levee to keep the from flooding about 13,000 acres of land. The road was sandbagged about 4 1/2 feet high. The Mississippi topped the sandbags and started to fill in the 13,000 acres. Then the Missouri broke it's levee covering the 13,000 acres and emptying into the Mississippi. Note the sandbags washed onto the electric line. Four 3 foot tubes with flood gates were completely washed away when the levee overtopped."
