Balloon Ascension by Nell Brayton in the summer of 1878, at the intersection of Main and Jefferson. An immense crowd of people assembled. It must have been a very hot day from the number of umbrellas up. Note the bonnets worn by the ladies at that time. Also note the immense big sand bar in the river at the foot of Jefferson street. Brayton descended in a parachute and landed on a picket fence in the rear of Peter Arb's Saddlery.
