Wreck of Steamboat Montana, June 22, 1884. The Montana was a sternwheel packet built in 1879. On June 22, 1884 the Montana was going up river at St. Charles when she was about half way under the railroad bridge when the current turned the boat into a pier and sank. It and its sister boats, the Dakota and the Wyoming were the last and largest steamboats to compete with the railroads.
