Cadillac Model K 1906

Description

There is no historical data on file in the vehicle binder. The provenance of the Cadillac is unknown, it is one of several unrestored "barn finds" that the museum's founder, Richard C. Paine Jr., acquired in years past. Our objective is to preserve Richard's automobiles just as he acquired them, both beautifully restored, or as unrestored originals. In addition to its preservation, the Cadillac continues to be researched so as to pin down its exact date of manufacture. Researching these old automobiles can be a fascinating and frustrating challenge; the Cadillac is proving to be just that. The body style of our car is in keeping with a 1906 Model K; the 'cant' of the front fenders is a dead give away, but the serial number and other mechanical details suggest 1907. The Model K was introduced in January of 1906. The chassis was the same as the 1905 models, except the spark control was now on the steering column and the oiler had a mechanical feed from a cam on the hub of the flywheel. The dash was pressed steel and the corners of the "hood" was rounded. This "hood" and dash treatment was used through 1908. 1906 cars can be identified by a long muffler and severe cant to the nose of the front fenders. In 1906, Model K calendar year sales and production were 3650 units Engine Numbers in 1906 were 8350-10000, but our Cadillac is engine number 20418. The 1907 Model K was the same as the 1906 model except the muffler was much shorter with an outlet at the front rather than side. Oiler drive changed from cam to pulley and belt. Engine/transmission drip pan added. Runabout bodies remained the same as 1906 but front fenders were changed -- nose of fender was now flattened and an inside skirt was added (early 1907 catalogs still showed the canted fender). Research conducted 9/25/2016 determines that this is a 1906 Model K. Cadillac Model M, two passenger Victoria Runabout in unrestored as found condition; the car has a r/red/brown body trimmed in black over black fenders with wood spoked wheels with traces of red paint the top is worn, the red/brown interior dry and cracked; the car is essentially complete with the exception of lighting. All 1906 single cylinder passenger bodies were "Victoria" style. 1906 automobiles can be identified by long mufflers and a severe cant to the nose of the fenders. Also, changed to new rounded corner hoods. Dash boards were now made out of pressed steel. The Seal Cove Auto Museum's unrestored 1906 Cadillac, which is known as a "Barn Find," is an unmodified and original example.
