Gathering Altar with the Aztec god of death, ruler of Mictlan. Created during the height of the Covid-19 lockdown in 2020, Mictlantecuhtli provided a space for people to see their community transition into another realm. The figure holds two bowls, one on each hand, each containing the potential to give and receive. The figure sits on a pedestal adorned with tiles made in community at the artists studio. Born and raised in the border city of El Paso, TX, George Rodriguez creates highly ornamented, ceramic sculptures, often underlined by a connection to sociopolitical themes. His guardian figures, tomb sculptures, and installations, commemorate and build community. His sculptures are part of the collections of the National Museum of Mexican Art, Chicago, IL; Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington D.C., and the National Museum in Stockholm, Sweden amongst others. Rodriguez holds a BFA from the University of Texas El Paso and an MFA from the University of Washington, Seattle.
