Michael C. Spafford was a noted Seattle painter, printmaker and professor emeritus at the University of Washington. After receiving an M.A. in art history at Harvard, he spent three years in Mexico City where he painted and exhibited. During these years he explored certain Classical Greek themes. His interest in mythology as a visual framework for thought and feeling was intensified by the two years he spent as a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome, 1967-1969.
