Doris Chase was a sculptor, painter, printmaker, writer, first generation video artist, and filmmaker. Known in Seattle as a painter and sculptor (notable local sculptures include the Changing Form in Seattle’s Kerry Park and Moon Gates at the Seattle Center), she gained international acclaim for her pioneering video work, while live in New York City, at the Hotel Chelsea, from 1972-2002.
Chase found the physical kinetic quality of making sculptures more challenging than painting. It required her to work collaboratively with other artisans to achieve her vision. And she extensively researched her sculptural materials, of wood and glue. She described these two assemblages, here and opposite, as “being in conversation.” What do you hear?
