Alden Mason was a prominent Northwest painter, who studied and taught at the University of Washington. The painting’s undulating lines were created by the artist’s squeeze bottle technique, his signature method of working after health concerns prevented the continuation of the Burpee Garden paintings (see level 2). He liked working with squeeze bottles giving the sensation that paint was an extension of his arm, enabling him to create long, fluid lines without having to stop due to a dry brush. This piece has an accessible quality, perhaps inspiring the viewer to practice their own long fluid lines.
