Ronald Pennell started as a gem engraver, but quickly transferred his skill to glass. His work displays a humorous iconography, interpreting his view of English country life, mythology and poetry as a series of dramatic events. On this free-form, green vase, the artist depicts himself here with his trusty terrier, being observed by a Harpy. The artist in possession of a sapling or branch, and the presence of a Harpy, invokes Dante’s Divine Comedy, where Dante and Virgil enter a pathless wood where Harpies nest.
