Doris Chase was a sculptor, painter, printmaker, writer, first generation video artist, and filmmaker. Known in Seattle as a painter and sculptor (notable local sculptures include the Changing Form in Seattle’s Kerry Park and Moon Gates at the Seattle Center), she gained international acclaim for her pioneering video work, while live in New York City, at the Hotel Chelsea, from 1972-2002. These two sculptural arrangements completed in 1967, located here and directly opposite, represent the beginning of her sculpture phase and discovery of her personal style, typified by multi-component compositions of rounded shapes, all variations on the circle.
