Bertil Vallien is the most widely recognized Swedish glass artist. He pioneered the sand-casting technique in the 1980s, a process that entails pouring molten glass into a prepared bed of sand to create a form. He is best known for his sand-cast boats, inspired by Viking boat burials, which address the themes of journey, memory, and time. This meandering, boat-like, form holds objects as if suspended in a moment.
