Photograph of the USS Utah as it was sinking after it was attacked by Japanese Bombers during the attack on Pearl Harbor in December of 1941. Photograph shows the USS Utah on it's side sinking into the ocean. Several sailors can be seen atop the sinking ship. Rescue boats are near it. In the distance smoke rises from another area. The boat on the far right has "F . II . N" on it's side.
Taped to the back of the photograph is a piece of paper with type on it. It says the following:
"The Japs mistook the USS Utah, a decomissioned target ship, for the Saratoga, because she was berthed where the aircraft carrier (then at sea) usually tied up. They wasted many bombs on a hulk which the Navy does not think valuable enough to Salvage. The Utah will become part of a new dock along Ford Island."
