Mortgage deed from Christian and Anna Hafkenscheid of East Cleveland to Nathan Soule of East Cleveland, mortgaging part of Lot 421, East Cleveland Township, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Signed by Christian and Anna Hafkenscheid. Recorded March 14, 1861, Cuyahoga County Records, Vol. [illegible], pp. 385-396, John Packard, Recorder. Cancellation signed by Nathan Soule, recorded February 24, 186[?], James Brokenshire, Recorder. Document is torn into two pieces (2026.0.5a and 2026.0.5b) and exhibits significant fading throughout, rendering portions of the text difficult or impossible to read. Old tape obscures the volume number in the recording notation and the final digit of the cancellation recording year. Handwritten note on verso of bottom half (2026.0.5b) seems to be a promissory note transferring rights from the estate of the deceased Rufus Dunham to another party, signed [August?] 6, 1862, by Moses Kelly acting as attorney for William Waterman, administrator of the estate. It's unclear how the promissory note is related to the mortgage deed.Context
Associated portion of Lot 421 now includes Kendall and Cheshire Roads in the Larchmere neighborhood. The Hafkenscheids later sold land to Fred Hank, William Van Aken's stepfather.Category
