Gold hunter case American Waltham pocket watch monogrammed OPS for O. P. [Van] Sweringen. The "van" in "van Sweringen" was initially dropped by an ancestor to "Americanize" the name, but O.P. and M.J. changed the name back to "Van Sweringen" in the early 1900s. The watch was possibly a birthday gift as the back case opens to reveal an engraved date, April 24, 1900, which was O.P.'s 21st birthday.
