Description

In this color photo of the opening day of the Major League season at Seattle’s Safeco Field, former Tacoma Rainiers, the AAA affiliate of the Mariners, left to right, Anthony Sanders, Todd Williams, Ryan Franklin and Mike Neill, throw out the first pitch. All four players were part of the 2000 U.S. Olympic baseball team that won the gold medal in Sydney, Australia. Team USA beat Cuba in the gold-medal game, 4-0 and was considered an upset as Cuba had not lost the gold since baseball had become a medal sport. At the time of their selection to Team USA, Franklin had a 3.37 ERA in 29 games with an 11-4 record for Tacoma, Williams led the PCL with 31 saves and played in four AAA All-Star Games, Neill was hitting .298 with 10 home runs and 58 RBIs, and Sanders had a .301 average with 41 RBIs and 11 homers.
