An athlete competes in the pole vault. Pierce County produced one of America's great pole vaulters in Casey Carrigan. The Orting High graduate qualified for the 1968 Olympics as a high school student. He finished 12th at the Game. At Orting High he set the state and national prep record with a jump of 17 feet, 4 ¾ inches in 1969. He finished fourth at the 1970 NCAA Championships for Stanford then grew tired of the sport. In 1974, he returned to the sport and vaulted to a No. 4 world ranking. His career-best 17-10 ½ came in 1975 and was less than eight inches off the world record.Lexicon
