Description

A baseball game is being played at Tacoma's Sprinker Recreation Center in the 1960s. The umpire behind home plate is Art Viafore, a longtime ump in Tacoma who was a high school star in baseball. Viafore, a 1949 graduate from Lincoln High School, was an all-state selection and the Abes lost to Yakima in the state championship game his junior and senior years. He was also an all-state selection at quarterback and helped lead Lincoln to a state championship. When his playing days ended, he umpired baseball for 20 years. Over the years, the Sprinker Recreation Center has expanded to include ice skating, tennis, racquetball, volleyball, pickleball, ping pong, basketball, football, soccer, softball, baseball, and skateboarding. The Sprinker Recreation Center was considered to be among the most progressive centers in the nation in 1998 and is one of 20 facilities to receive the Excellence on Ice award.
