Boys play pee wee football at a Pierce County Park. Football has been a popular sport for youth in the Tacoma area, which saw games played through the Pierce County Parks League. Many teams had sponsors from area businessmen, including Ben Cheney. Cheney himself was an avid baseball fan but came from a low-income family who couldn’t afford his own baseball gear. Cheney grew up to sponsor numerous teams, of both sexes, and by his death in 1971 it was estimated he had helped more than 5,000 youth through sponsorship by the Cheney Lumber Company, which was founded by Cheney in 1936.Lexicon
