Canadian track star Harry Jerome raced regularly in the South Sound area in all-comer meets staged by Pierce County Parks and Recreation. Jerome graduated from high school in North Vancouver and helped lead the University of Oregon to two NCAA titles. He represented Canada in the 1960, ‘64 and ‘68 Olympics, winning a bronze medal in the 100-meter dash at the ‘64 Games in Tokyo. In 1967, he won gold at the Pan American Games. He set several world records including tying Germany’s Armin Hary with a 10.0-second 100 meter in 1960. Jerome died of a brain aneurysm in 1982 at the age of 42. In his honor, the Harry Jerome International Track Classic is staged annually in Burnaby and a statue was erected in Vancouver’s Stanley Park.Lexicon
