Description

Mercer Island product and future University of Washington standout and NBA journeyman Steve Hawes goes up for a bucket in a Plywood Tacoma game against the Renton Roadrunners in1972. There is no record of the score in the game, but as Plywood Tacoma was one of the most dominant AAU programs of the era and went 35-3 that season, it’s safe to assume the result did not favor Renton. By this time, Clint Names, wearing No. 10 here, was the team’s general manager and coach as well as a player and would eventually lead the team to the National Amateur Basketball Association championship in 1973, following the dissolution of the Cheney Studs. The team would have the opportunity to host the tournament in 1974 in Pacific Lutheran University’s Olson Auditorium, but could not pull the back-to-back, losing to the Minneapolis Kings in the final, 94-88.
