Description

All-Star High School football coach Norm Mayer, left, talks on a football field in 1959 with fellow coaches. Mayer, who was an all-conference guard at Puget Sound, began teaching at Grandview then moved to Pe Ell where he coached basketball and baseball. He returned to Puget Sound where he was an assistant football coach and head basketball coach. Mayer then became a football, basketball and track coach at Stadium High School before moving on to Lincoln High. While at Lincoln, Mayer compiled a 140-50-6 record in 23 years with the Abes. He led Lincoln to the city championship, the cross state league title and the state championship in 1948. Mayer retired from football coaching to become the school district’s athletic director. He was inducted into the Pierce County-Tacoma Sports Hall of Fame in 2005. Photo by the Everett Herald.
