Norm Mayer (left) talks with his assistant coaches with the Lincoln Abes during a football game in 1960. Mayer began his 23-year coaching career at Lincoln in 1945 and compiled an impressive 140-50-6 record. It's the third most wins by a football coach in Pierce County. After coaching at Lincoln for 23 years, he became the district's athletic director in 1968. Mayer began his own athletic career at Lon Beach, Calif., where he turned out for football, basketball and baseball. He accepted a football scholarship to the University of Washington and later transferred to the College of Puget Sound, where he was all-conference as a guard and as a halfback. After CPS, he taught at Grandview, Washington, then at Pe Ell, where his basketball team was runner-up for the Southwest championship. He then returned to CPS and was the head basketball coach and assistant football coach. He then went to Stadium and coached track for two years before coming to Lincoln in 1945.
