Norm Mayer walked the sidelines wearing rain gear as he coaches another football game for Lincoln High School. Written below the photo Mayer wrote “20 point lead.” Which explains his smile. Mayer became Lincoln's head football coach in 1945 and coached there 23 years, compiling an impressive 140-50-6 record. After graduating in the late 1930s from the College of Puget Sound, where he was an all-conference guard, Mayer began his coaching and teaching career at Grandview, Wash., and then taught and coached basketball and baseball at Pe Ell High School. He then returned to his alma mater College of Puget Sound and became the assistant football coach and head basketball coach. He then became an assistant football and basketball coach and head track coach at Stadium High School. In 1945, Mayer became the head football coach at Lincoln High School and coached there for 23 years. He led the Abes to a state championship in 1948 and compiled an impressive 140-50-6 record.
