Description

The Tacoma Elks softball team poses for a team photo wearing team jerseys. The Elks organization sponsored many youth and amateur sports teams from baseball and basketball to hockey and handball. The Elks won the 1948 Tacoma City League championship and finished second in the state. Bill Ruehle, a former fastpitch player, was inducted into the Tacoma-Pierce County Old-Timers Baseball-Softball Association Hall of Fame in 1993. The Elks began sponsoring softball teams in 1938 and John Rappin was the manager. Ted Goranson and Harry Mounsey, along with catchers Ed Cartozian and Bill Wieking rounded out his batteries in the early days. Photo donated by Bill and Peggy Ruehle.
