Description

The Tacoma Rainiers team photo from 2002 finished with a 65-76 record and were fourth in the Pacific Coast League Northern Division. The Rainiers, the AAA affiliate of the Seattle Mariners, were managed by Dan Rohn. Among the minor league players were Willie Bloomquist, a South Kitsap graduate in Port Orchard who helped lead the Wolves to a high school state baseball championship, Scott Podsednik and Pat Borders. Podsednik went on to play for the Mariners, Milwaukee, the Boston Red Sox where he led the major leagues in stolen bases (70, 2004), Chicago White Sox, Colorado, Los Angeles Dodgers and finished his 11-year career with a .281 batting average, .379 slugging percentage, an OPS of .719 and an on-base percentage of .339. Borders played from 1988-2005 and had an impressive debut on April 6, 1988 for the Toronto Blue Jays when he had three hits and five RBIs. Borders played for Toronto for eight seasons before playing for Kansas City, Houston, St. Louis, California Angels, Chicago White Sox, Cleveland, Seattle and Minnesota. Borders won two World Series and was named the MVP in 1992 and was a member of the gold-medal winning USA baseball team in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
