Pepe Fernandez, right, of the Tacoma Tides takes on an unknown opponent during a 1976 match in the American Soccer League. In its lone ASL season, the Tides (10 wins, 6 losses, 5 draws) finished second in the West Division, 19 points behind the Los Angeles Skyhawks. The Tides beat the Utah Golden Spikers, 2-1, in the first round of the playoffs before losing to the eventual champion Skyhawks, 2-1, in the semifinals. Fernandez tied for 14th in ALS scoring with 15 points on seven goals and one assist. David Chadwick was Tacoma's leading scorer with nine goals and eight assists for 26 points, tied for third in ASL. Fernandez, born Cirilo Fernandez in Uruguay in 1943, played 17 matches for the Seattle Sounders of the North American Soccer League from 1974-76 and 11 matches for the NASL indoor Sounders in 1981-82. Tacoma's backup goalkeeper behind Jamil Canal was Bruce Arena, who went on to win five titles as a coach in Major League Soccer and coached the United States men's national team from 1998-2006. The Tides were owned by Booth Gardner, who went on to become governor of Washington from 1985-93, and the team's general manager was Tacoma sports impresario Stan Naccarato. The ASL commissioner during the Tides' lone season was former NBA legend Bob Cousy.
