Standout distance runner Gerry Lindgren, right, accepts an award in a 1965 photograph with Tacoma Giants pitcher Ron Herbel, center, and an unidentified man.
As a senior at Rogers of Spokane in 1964, Lindgren set a United States high school record by running 5,000 meters in 13 minutes, 44.0 seconds, a mark that stood for 40 years until future Olympian Galen Rupp ran a 13:37.91.
At the US-USSR track meet in Los Angeles on July 25, 1964, Lindgren beat two experiences Russian runners, Leonid Ivanov and Anatoly Dutov, to win the 10,000 meters.
Lindgren went on to win the Olympic Trials that summer and was named high school athlete of the year by Track and Field News.
Herbel pitched for the Tacoma Giants from 1961-63 and the Tacoma Twins in 1972.
Herbel's best season in Tacoma was 1961 when he posted a 1605 record with a 3.57 earned-run average and nine complete games in 28 starts.Lexicon
