Description

The Lakewood Ice Arena snack bar was a big draw for skaters who worked up big thirsts and appetites skating at the rink when it opened in the late 1930s. Don Gilbertson and his mother, Elsie Gilbertson, ran the snack bar for many years and are pictured here in 1949. The arena opened in 1938 and quickly became an entertainment hub for Tacoma area residents of all ages. The rink continued to provide skating until part of the building collapsed in 1982 and there rest was demolished.
