As a young child David Riggs skated at the Lakewood Ice Arena and was involved in the Lakewood Figure Skating Club, later renamed to the Lakewood Ice Arena. Riggs was half of the comedy team of Hamm & Riggs, with partner Larry Hamm, that performed at the ice arena during its heyday. The arena itself hosted numerous ice shows to great accolades and had as many as 175 skaters performing in eight shows by the mid 1950s.
