Description

Members of the 1948 Teamsters Local 567 fastpitch softball team sit on grass for a team photograph. The Teamsters sponsored the team during what was the Golden Era of fastpitch softball in the area, from 1943-45. One of the players, Bill Zenk Sr., played left field for the Teamsters in 1943 and newspaper reports state Zenk “cracked a homer against the legendary hurler Woodrow Red of the Eagles in a 3-2 loss.” With teammates John Rockway (Washington State HOF pitcher), Bob Heugel, George Rocket and Sonny Ally, the Teamsters edged the Eagles 1-0 to win the district title. The Teamsters competed in the World Series Softball Championships in Detroit, losing a pair off 2-1 games to Cincinnati and New York teams. Pictured in the back row, left to right, Happy Daye, Bill Snarksi (manager). Middle row, left to right, Bob Corbin, Joey Johns (Washington State HOF), Doug Adam, Wally Brebner, Ralph Baker and Hubert Smith. Front row, left to right, unknown, Bob Berthiume, Harold Smith, Red Dowd, Bob Bannats and batboy Jerry Snarski. Photo donated by Joey Johns.
