Description

Jimmy Grogan went on to become one of the finest figure skaters to come out of Pierce County. Grogan had natural ability and by the time he was 12 years old and teamed with Lois Secreto to claim the 1945 Pacific Coast Junior Pairs championship. Grogan moved to California where he continued to have success under Hans Johnson, brother of long-time Lakewood teacher John Johnson. Grogan placed third at the 1947 U.S. Senior Men’s championship and was second in the North American competition. He earned a spot on the U.S. team at age 16 and competed at the 1948 Olympic Games in France, where he finished sixth in singles. At the 1952 Olympic Games in Oslo, Norway, Grogan earned a bronze medal. Grogan placed second at both the U.S. and World championships on four occasions. He later went on to a professional career with the Hollywood Ice Revue and the Ice Capades. Grogan was inducted into the Tacoma Sports Hall of Fame in 2005.
